The South Suffolk Taskforce (SSTF) has published its Resilient Recovery report, outlining how the local economy can make the most of its assets to recover from the pandemic whilst strengthening business and employment opportunities.
Key recommendations in the report:
- Welcomes the way that working together as a Taskforce impacted positively on the local economy e.g. helping to secure the future of the former Philips Avent site in Glemsford
- Backs Babergh DC’s Levelling-Up Bid for Sudbury as an important driver for future growth in the town
- Highlights the importance of maximising the cultural tourism industry in South Suffolk
- Identifies major road improvements at the Copdock Interchange as necessary for the area to benefit fully from Freeport East
James Cartlidge MP, Chair of the South Suffolk Taskforce commented:
“South Suffolk’s economy has faced a number of set backs in recent years with the closure of two of the biggest employment sites and, most significantly, the far-reaching impact of the pandemic. Despite this, along with the other members of the Taskforce, I am incredibly positive about our local economy’s future. Attracting GCB Cocoa to the former Philips Avent site highlights our ability to secure manufacturing investment and employment in our area. I am also sure that if we make the most of our incredible cultural offering, combining the appeal of Gainsborough, Constable and Cedric Morris to enrich our tourism sector, our retail and hospitality can be substantially bolstered.”
Cllr John Ward, leader, Babergh District Council commented:
“The South Suffolk Taskforce has an essential part to play in our plans for business recovery in the region. By working together with key partners we can identify opportunities for growth, support specialist sectors, create employment opportunities and encourage innovative ways of working to help boost the local economy. As we look towards the future, it is important that we continue to work together not only to grow businesses in the region but also to attract new businesses and investment to the area.”
Cllr Michael Holt, cabinet member for economic growth, Babergh District Council commented:
“After four years of evidence gathering across the district, the South Suffolk Taskforce has produced a very thorough report that, in addition to some useful recommendations, has a wealth of data that will enable Babergh and its partners to support growth in the years to come.”
Chris Starkie, Chief Executive of New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, commented:
“This report illustrates the positive impact made by the South Suffolk Taskforce and the significant outcomes it has achieved. These recommendations rightly focus on how the area can fully capitalise on its strengths, such as its superb cultural offer and proximity to Freeport East, for the benefit of the local economy. I look forward to working with our partners and local stakeholders to ensure South Suffolk is a place where businesses will want to invest and create jobs.”
