But bosses at Highways England have warned that those using the A14 in Cambridgeshire will face another three months of temporary limits – although work should have been completed by the end of March.
Motorists using trunk roads managed by Highways England – the new name for the Highways Agency – have faced months of frustration when travelling to or from the region.
There are two stretches of work on the A12 between the M25 and Ipswich – as well as the resurfacing work in Suffolk there is also ongoing resurfacing work near Brentwood which has a 40mph speed limit.
That was also due to be completed in March but its completion has been delayed until next month.
The work in Suffolk started in December and was due to have been completed by March – but was extended until the end of May and now Highways England say the final engineers will move off at the end of this month.
They explained the reasons behind the delays to South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge when he visited the site of the work that has been causing problems.
However work to build extra lanes between Girton and Histon around Cambridge – which have a 50mph limit – will not be finished until September. They should also have been completed by March.
The agency apologised for the delay and pledged to do everything possible to keep traffic flowing until the work is complete.
Service delivery team leader Aran Nugent, said: “I appreciate this will be frustrating news for drivers, but I’d ask them to bear with us while we complete this important work.
“We’re disappointed with these delays, and are working with our contractor Costain and supervisor Amey to understand why they have occurred and prevent similar issues happening in the future.
“Our contractor made an error with the programming and there were added complications with diverting the communication cables alongside the road.
A Highways England spokeswoman said: “We always try and give information about our roadworks in a clear, straightforward way, with a realistic indication about when we expect them to be complete.
“We appreciate that it is frustrating when roadworks last longer than expected. We work hard to prevent it from happening and promise to learn from these recent cases on the A12 and the A14.
“On the A12, we’ve been taking a new approach to resurfacing that will mean a better quality, longer lasting road surface. It’s the first time we’ve used this technique on a road like the A12 and it has taken longer than we thought. However, we are now able to remove the 40mph speed limit during the day, and we expect the work to be complete by the end of June.
“The extra lanes we’ve built on the A14 between Histon to Girton are open to traffic and drivers are already benefitting from improved journeys. We will do all we can to keep traffic flowing until the remaining work is finished.”
